RISHIKESH – The Holy Town

Rishikesh

Rishikesh, also called as Teerth Nagri or Yog Nagri, is a small holy town and a municipal board in the district of Dehradun in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The word “Rishikesh” means “lord of the senses” and is one of the several names of Lord Vishnu. There are two other districts present around the vicinity of Rishikesh, namely, Tehri Garhwal and Pauri Garwhal. The city is situated in the Himalayas’ foothills along the banks of River Ganges, which itself justifies its magnificent scenic beauty. Rishikesh is a major tourist attraction inviting visitors from all over the world. It forms as the gateway to the Himalayas and the Char Dham Yatra, or Four Shrines Sacred Journey. With several yoga and meditation centers to boast of, Rishikesh has been nicknamed as “the world capital of yoga”.

Rishikesh acquired its name when the impressed Lord Vishnu, by the Tapsaya of ‘Raibhya Rishi’, appeared as Lord Hrishikesh. The place is marked as a landmark where Lord Rama regretted killing Ravana, King of Lanka. It is believed that Lakshmana, younger brother of Ram crossed a portion of the river Ganges. Today ‘Lakshman Jhula’ stands at that very point. Initially “the Jhula” was made out of jute but was replaced by iron ropes in 1889. A large number of beautiful and eye warming temples can be encountered at this amazing spot. This small city has a 120-year old Kailas Ashram Brahmavidyapeetham which is an institution meant especially to preserve and promote the traditional Vedantic Studies.
